Forty Years of Protecting Freedom
Liberty Institute was founded as Free Market Foundation in 1972, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to protecting religious freedoms and strengthening families.
What began in Plano, Texas, nearly 40 years ago has grown into an influential nonprofit legal organization dedicated to defending and restoring religious liberty across America.
A Legal Powerhouse for Religious Liberty
We added our legal division, once known as Liberty Legal Institute, in 1997. Today, we not only employ an experienced team of full-time constitutional attorneys, but we also work with volunteer attorneys across America who donate their time to advance the mission of defending our nation’s first freedom. Some of our recent cases include representing the major veterans groups in the high-profile Mojave Desert Cross case and defending a high school valedictorian who was told she could not pray in her graduation speech.
The New Face of Freedom
In the fall of 2009, after careful consideration, prayer and surveying of our different constituents, the Board of Directors unanimously approved a new name and brand for the organization, bringing our policy and legal divisions under one name. Now, we are simply Liberty Institute.
Although our name has changed, our steadfast dedication to freedom is the same. We remain committed to protecting and defending religious liberty in America through our work in the courts, legislature, grassroots and media.
Join The Fight
We invite you to join us in the battle to restore religious liberty in America. Please pray with us, share Liberty Institute with your friends and family — or, if you are called to help financially, donate now.
