With its authorization ending December 16, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom is winding down at a time when it’s needed more than ever. Since 1998, the commission has sent delegations to investigate and report on the world’s worst persecutors, shining a bright light on their egregious violations of human rights and religious freedom.
Late last summer, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H.R. 2687, which would have extended the life of the USCRIF for 2 more years. Due to a hold placed bySenator Richard Durbin (IL), reportedly in order to obtain funding for a prison in his state, the Senate failed to act on the USCRIF’s funding. Recently USCRIF has uncovered and reported on widespread and violent human rights violations against religious minorities across the Middle East, including Egyptian Copts, other Christian minority populations and disfavored Muslim groups. Now, unless President Obama acts to revive the USCRIF, their important work will cease.
Please urge President Obama to act now and save the commission. Call the White House at: 202-456-1111
